A little known treasure just outside of London is Sandycombe Lodge, a small villa built by England’s greatest landscape painter JMW Turner (1775-1851). It is located near the River Thames at Twickenham a half hour’s train ride from London Waterloo.

Its location was ideal for the artist who sketched and painted this area on many occasions. He could often be seen fishing the river too!

JMW Turner’s work is currently on display at the JMW Turner exhibition in Sandycombe Lodge. Some of his oil sketches, on loan from the Tate Gallery and focussing on his work in this area, can be seen. The JMW Turner exhibition runs until March 29th 2020.

The house can also be explored and is open Wednesday to Sunday, noon to 4pm. There are guided tours at 1pm, 2pm and 3pm, and the cost is £8 which includes the special exhibition

Michael Robinson, who has written Turner: His Life and Works in 500 Images, has always had a passion for this artist’s work and would be very happy to show you some of the other locations he painted on one of his art tours.
